Wonder Pets! debuted on March 3, 2006, on Nick Jr. and Noggin. The main characters of the show are three elementary school classroom pets — Linny the Guinea Pig, Turtle Tuck, and Ming-Ming Duckling — who travel around the globe to rescue baby animals who need their help. Like real preschoolers, these three unlikely heroes don't have any actual super powers, but by working together they can conquer any obstacle: "What's gonna work? Teamwork!"
At the beginning of each episode, viewers hear the school children, off-screen, leaving school at the end of the day. Once the classroom is vacant, a tin can telephone begins to ring. The Wonder Pets answer the phone and find that an animal is in trouble somewhere. They board a flying toy sailboat and rush off to the rescue, singing:
"Linny, Tuck, and Ming-Ming too! We're Wonder Pets and we'll help you! We're not too big, and we're not too tough, but when we work together we've got the right stuff! Goooooooo Wonder Pets! Yaaaaaaayyyyyyy!"
The style of animation used to create Wonder Pets! is called "photo-puppetry." It is an original style of animation created specifically for this series that allows animators to manipulate photographs of real animals. The result is striking, memorable, and truly unique and kids really seem to identify with the characters because they look so real and huggable.
Each episode is like a mini-opera with the dialogue on the show being almost entirely sung to an original score by some of Broadway's top composers and performed by a live orchestra, so the show has been called an operetta. And each episode encourages teamwork, empathy, problem-solving skills, and an appreciation of music and humor.
